The List: 29 Best Free and Paid Keyword Research Tools for 2023

Various free and paid keyword research tools are available to help you achieve your goals.

But a lot depends on your situation.

If you’re trying to improve on a “hobby” website or a “labor of love” and have all the time in the world to do it, then free versions of these tools are acceptable. You can still get keyword ideas, metrics, and other data without spending a dime.

But, if you’re a digital or content marketer, freelancer, or consultant that works with clients, then paid keyword research tools will provide you with the best data to get the job done.

You get all the information and metrics you need to target specific keywords, optimize for SEO and get faster results.

Let’s look at some of the free vs. paid tools of the trade.

1. Ahrefs

Ahrefs is one of the industry standards for keyword research in 2023. They have a “Lite” version of their plan for $99 per month and a more comprehensive “Pro” plan for $199.

The free version is extremely limited but can be worth a try if you have plenty of time to grow your brand. It allows you to input one website into the Ahrefs interface, and from there, you can track your organic keywords, traffic, backlinks, and referring domains.

You can also track your domain authority as time passes. Using the free version, you can steadily monitor your progress to see if your keyword strategy is taking hold.

However, suppose you’re serious about SEO, keyword strategy, and developing your brand and message more quickly. In that case, the paid versions are the way to go.

Especially the “Pro” version.

You get one of the best keyword explorer tools in the business and all the bells and whistles you need to become an SEO Jedi! These include;

  • Site Audits: For yourself or our clients.
  • SERP: Comparison and position history charts.
  • Content Explorer: Find content ideas and link opportunities.
  • Competitive Analysis: Compare your site to competitors to see what they’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong.
  • Content Gap: See what keywords competitors rank for, and you don’t.
  • Keyword Metrics: Get keyword difficulty, traffic and click rates, and more in seconds, leaving no doubt about which ones are worth your time.

3. MOZ Keyword Explorer

If you’re looking for a great free research tool, Moz Keyword Explorer is all you’ll need.

Here’s a list of what the free version offers:

  • Keyword Overview: Type a keyword into the search bar and see monthly volume and keyword difficulty metrics.
  • Organic CTR: This feature shows the % (Click-through-rate) for organic and traditional links in the SERPs. If you see many ads, graphics, and competition, your Organic CTR will be lower.
  • Priority: Displays, on a scale from 0-100, combined metrics that determine if a keyword is worth your time. A high Priority means higher volume and lower difficulty.
  • Keyword Suggestions: Get instant keyword ideas and related search volume.
  • SERP Analysis: See who’s ranking for your keyword with a comprehensive SERP analysis. This report shows “page and domain authority” that helps determine how difficult or easy your keyword will be to target. The Next Step: Choosing a Keyword Research Tool That’s Right For You

Now that you’ve seen the list of the best free and paid keyword research tools for 2023, the next step is choosing one that’s right for you. I know if money were no object, you’d choose all of them. But that’s not realistic.

So, how do you choose the right tool? It depends on your situation.

Let’s break it down

Let’s face it; we could probably end the conversation right here. The free plans are an obvious choice if you’re low on funds. But consider your finances as an investment in your future. If it’s possible to cut some “fluff” from your monthly expenses, then a “lite” or “starter” version of a keyword research tool would be a great option.

Remember, the more extensive the tool is and the faster the research process, the quicker your content creation and improved rankings.

It takes time for content to climb the Google SERP ladder, so the longer it takes to produce output, the longer the climb.

If your project is a “labor of love” or a hobby, then free keyword research tools should be sufficient for your needs. However, if you’re in this as a business entity, then you need to learn as much as you can about keywords in a reasonable amount of time.

The longer it takes, the slower your business growth, so paid tools may be your best bet.

If you’re brand new to the game of SEO and keywords, there’s no reason to start throwing cash at every tool you come across. What good does an expensive keyword research tool do you if you don’t understand the metrics or what you’re analyzing?

As someone once said, “You have to crawl before you walk,” so don’t be in a rush to spend money. Gain some experience with free versions of tools to get your feet wet.

If you’ve been in the game for a bit and have an idea of keyword metrics and SEO, then a paid keyword research tool is essential for growing your business or becoming an authority in your niche.
